Why are players wearing black armbands during India vs England 3rd ODI?

India and England observed a minute of silence before the start of the third ODI match at the Lord’s on Sunday.

The gesture was to pay respects and tribute to legendary West Indies cricketer Garfield Sobers, who passed away at the age of 89 on Friday. No cause was given.

County side Nottinghamshire — where Sobers enjoyed a distinguished stint — mourned him as “Cricket’s greatest-ever all-rounder, and an iconic figure in Nottinghamshire history,” expressing its deep sadness at his passing and recalling his contributions of 7,041 runs and 281 wickets for the county.

BCCI also gave tribute to Sobers on the day of his passing.
