Madhya Pradesh’s Saransh Jain has been included in India’s Test squad for the two-match series against Sri Lanka, which begins in Galle on August 15.

The 33-year-old off-spinning all-rounder has earned his maiden senior national call-up after years of consistent performances on the domestic circuit.

An injury to Washington Sundar, India’s only specialist off-spinner during the recent tour of England, opened the door for Saransh’s inclusion.

The Indore cricketer has featured in 54 First-Class matches, scoring 2,223 runs at an average of 31.75 and claiming 188 wickets at 27.30.

A left-handed batter, Saransh was part of the Madhya Pradesh side that defeated Mumbai to win the 2021-22 Ranji Trophy title. He most recently represented India A against Sri Lanka A, where he emerged as the standout performer in the second four-day match, scoring an unbeaten 70 and taking six wickets.

If he makes the playing XI, Saransh will become the first off-spinner to make his Test debut for India since Washington Sundar, who debuted against Australia at the Gabba in January 2021.
