Hardik Pandya to CSK? The IPL Trades That Actually Changed Everything

Talk of Hardik Pandya swapping Mumbai blue for Chennai yellow has dominated this off-season’s rumour mill, with MI reportedly angling for Ayush Mhatre and Shivam Dube (or Dewald Brevis) in return. Nothing’s signed yet, but if it lands, it would rank among the IPL’s most seismic trades — a fitting moment to revisit deals that have turned heads in the past.

1. Sanju Samson (Rajasthan Royals to Chennai Super Kings, 2026) — Rs 18 crore

One of the biggest pre-auction trades in IPL history. RR’s long-serving captain, with the team since his 2013 debut, moved to CSK in a straight swap for Ravindra Jadeja — back at his first franchise after 14 years in Chennai — and Sam Curran. Samson’s start was shaky, three low scores before an unbeaten 115 against Delhi Capitals, but the trade reshaped both dressing rooms overnight.

2. Cameron Green (Mumbai Indians to RCB, 2024) — Rs 17.5 crore

Still one of the most expensive trade the league has seen. RCB absorbed Green’s full MI contract in a straight cash deal, banking on the all-rounder’s utility with bat and ball to finally end its title drought. MI, mid-rebuild, cashed in on an asset who hadn’t quite settled into its XI.

3. Hardik Pandya (Gujarat Titans to Mumbai Indians, 2024) — Rs 15 crore

5. Shikhar Dhawan (Sunrisers Hyderabad to Delhi Capitals, 2019)

A rare three-for-one: Vijay Shankar, Abhishek Sharma and Shahbaz Nadeem moved to Hyderabad, plus Rs 1.75 crore back to Delhi to balance the books. Dhawan, unhappy with his SRH valuation, returned to his home franchise and kept opening for it well into his late thirties — one of the few players traded in multiple high-profile deals across his career.

6. Ashish Nehra–Shikhar Dhawan swap (Mumbai Indians–Delhi Daredevils, 2009)

The trade that quietly launched two careers in opposite directions. Nehra, coming off a wicketless 2008, moved to Delhi and returned 19 wickets at an economy of 6.78 in 2009 — third-best in the tournament.
