The development comes just days after an earlier report stating that the BCCI Centre of Excellence had given him the go-ahead to participate in the away Test series.
A report in Timesofindia.com stated that the pacer continues to feel pain in his left knee, which may rule him out of the upcoming two matches.
The Test series against the islanders will get underway on August 15 in Galle, and the second match will be played in Colombo from August 23.
India needs to win seven of its remaining nine Tests of this World Test Championship cycle to remain in contention for a place in the final.
If his absence is confirmed, Bumrah will join the likes of Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy, who have already been ruled out of the series. .
Spinner Washington Sundar will also miss the first Test but will return in time for the contest in Colombo. Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj and Gurnoor Brar are the other pace-bowling options in the squad.
