Maharashtra Unveils MahaCrimeOS AI, India’s First Cybercrime AI Platform

Maharashtra has taken a significant leap in digital governance and public safety by unveiling MahaCrimeOS AI—India’s first artificial intelligence-powered platform designed to fast-track cybercrime investigations. The launch, announced at the Microsoft AI Tour Mumbai, marks a new milestone in leveraging cutting-edge technology to protect citizens against evolving online threats.

In a high-profile event, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella showcased the AI-driven system, which is already operational in 23 police stations in Nagpur and will be expanded across all 1,100 police stations in Maharashtra.

“Maharashtra sets a new benchmark for digital safety,” Fadnavis said in a social media post, highlighting the state’s rapid scale-up from a pilot phase to a planned statewide rollout. “From Nagpur to statewide scale, Maharashtra is driving AI-powered governance for citizen safety!”

A Smarter Tool for Cybercrime Investigations

Developed through a strategic partnership between the Maharashtra government, cybersecurity startup CyberEye, Microsoft India Development Center (IDC), and the state’s special purpose vehicle MARVEL, MahaCrimeOS AI leverages Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service and Microsoft Foundry technologies. The platform offers a suite of capabilities that enhance investigative efficiency, such as:

• Automated creation of digital case files.
• Multilingual data extraction.
• AI-assisted legal and procedural support.
• Intelligent linking of related cases and evidence.

These features aim to drastically reduce manual workload and accelerate justice delivery a pressing need as cybercrime incidents in India continue to rise.

Satya Nadella emphasised the importance of responsible AI in public systems. “Our collaboration with Maharashtra reflects a focus on how AI can deliver real, positive impact for people across the state,” he said during the launch event.

Chief Minister Fadnavis echoed this sentiment, framing the platform as part of a broader mission to harness ethical AI for public good. The government plans to integrate similar technologies across other sectors—from healthcare to education to make governance smarter and more citizen-centric.
