Shubman Gill dropped from India’s T20 World Cup squad

Shubman Gill has missed out on a spot in India’s T20 World Cup squad, with his recent numbers in the format weighing heavily against him. The India Test captain has gone 18 T20I innings without a half-century, a prolonged drought that has weakened his case in a format driven by output and immediacy.

While there have been brief flashes of form, they have not altered the broader trend. Gill’s 28-ball 47 against Pakistan at the 2025 Asia Cup, which marked his return to the T20I side, remains a rare standout in an otherwise inconsistent run. This year, he has scored 291 runs from 15 innings, with a highest score of 47, averaging 24.25 at a strike rate of 137.26. There have been five single-digit scores.

However, India captain Suryakumar Yadav ruled out form as a reason for Gill’s omission. He stated that the team combination played a role, with the mamagement wanting a keeper to bat at the top.

The recently concluded T20I series against South Africa did little to change perceptions. Gill managed scores of 4, 0 and 28, reinforcing concerns over his impact and reliability at the top of the order.
