20 Years of Dosti: Friends Forever EXCLUSIVE: “I desired to cast Ajay Devgn in the role that Akshay Kumar did and Akshay in the role that Bobby Deol did” – Suneel Darshan 20 : Bollywood News

Dosti: Friends Forever (2005) completed 20 years on December 23 and on this special occasion, Suneel Darshan spoke exclusively with Bollywood Hungama about his memories of working on the film, its casting and a lot more.

20 Years of Dosti: Friends Forever EXCLUSIVE: “I desired to cast Ajay Devgn in the role that Akshay Kumar did and Akshay in the role that Bobby Deol did” – Suneel DarshanSpeaking about the release date and one of the film’s leading actors, Suneel Darshan said, “I made 7 films with Akshay Kumar in 7 years. Dosti was the last film that we worked on. Akshay had another film called Family – Ties of Blood (2006), which was scheduled to release 3 weeks after Dosti. I was clear that I wanted my film to be released on Christmas because I thought it would be a nice period to bring in family audiences.”

Dosti: Friends Forever, true to its title, revolves around an unbreakable bond between two friends. Raj Malhotra (Akshay Kumar) is battling a terminal illness, and the film culminates in his death. But even as his time runs out, Raj dedicates himself to fixing what’s broken in the life of his closest friend, Karan Thapar (Bobby Deol), ensuring that Karan’s relationships fall into place before he says his final goodbye. Interestingly, the emotional core here echoes Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), which also played on a similar idea of a dying protagonist quietly setting things right for the people he loves.

Did Suneel Darshan ever fear that Dosti: Friends Forever would be compared with the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer? He replied, “Never. I thought both were very different as films. Also, I already had the subject in mind much before. In fact, when it came to casting, a role reversal also happened. I desired to cast Ajay Devgn in the role that Akshay did and Akshay in the role that Bobby did! With Ajay, this happened everytime that we tried to work together, but somehow, it would not materialize. It happened quite a few times.”

To date, he still hasn’t worked with Ajay Devgn. Suneel Darshan sighed, “Yes. But there was never anything sour between us.”

On the other hand, Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008) was released three years after Dosti: Friends Forever and it’s memorable for the song ‘Small Town Girl’, where a revengeful girl is shown torturing the protagonist by making him run errands. A similar scene existed in Dosti: Friends Forever when Kajal (Lara Dutta) tests Karan by making him her slave.

Suneel Darshan laughed at this comparison and simply said, “I did watch Bachna Ae Haseeno, but didn’t focus on that point actually.”
