Gig worker held in chain theft case


The Mangaluru Rural police have arrested Rohit B Das, 24, of Kakkepadavu in Bantwal taluk, a gig worker, in connection with the theft of a gold chain from a woman on December 25.

The victim Ratnavati’s 32-gram gold chain was allegedly snatched by the accused while she was walking towards her house, along with her daughter, on Koppalakadu Road, in Yeyyadi, on December 25 evening. The police team, led by Inspector Gaviraj and Police Sub Inspector Arun Kumar, traced Das and arrested him on Sunday, December 28. The police recovered the gold chain worth ₹3.5 lakh and seized the scooter used by him.

On inquiry, Das told police that he worked for Swiggy and Zomato. As he needed money to repay a loan, he had stolen the necklace.

The police said that so far, a total of seven cases of chain snatching have been reported this year in the city. The accused in all seven cases were traced, the police said.
