India squad for New Zealand ODI series: Gill back as captain, Pant holds on to spot

Shubman Gill will lead India’s squad for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand starting January 11, BCCI announced on Saturday. Shreyas Iyer has been named Gill’s deputy for the series.

Iyer has been out of the Indian setup after sustaining an injury to his spleen during India’s tour of Australia last October. He is set to feature in the next round of the Vijay Hazare Trophy after a conditional clearance from BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Iyer getting a look in means Ruturaj Gaikwad sits out against the Black Caps.

Mohammed Siraj, who was rested for the South Africa, is back for this 50-over assignment. Mohammed Shami, meanwhile, continues to miss out.

Most significantly, Rishabh Pant has managed to hold on to his spot in the Indian side, despite chat of Ishan Kishan being favoured over him. Ishan had already been recalled to India’s squad for the five-match T20I series against New Zealand later this month, as well as the T20 World Cup starting next month.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have also been included in the squad.
