Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has weighed in on the much-discussed spy thriller Dhurandhar, describing the film as “brilliant in execution” even as he flagged certain political dialogues that he personally disagreed with. His assessment, shared in a detailed review on Letterboxd, walks a careful line between artistic praise and critical observation.

Not an opportunist”Released on December 5, Dhurandhar is directed by Aditya Dhar and stars Ranveer Singh, alongside Akshaye Khanna, R Madhavan, Sanjay Dutt and Arjun Rampal. The movie has become one of Bollywood’s biggest commercial successes, drawing both acclaim and controversy for its political tone and depiction of espionage themes.

Kashyap acknowledged several elements of the film that he found exceptional. He singled out the technical finesse and directorial commitment behind the production, calling the film “a brilliant film that entirely [is] set in Pakistan.” In his review, he also highlighted Ranveer Singh’s performance as one of his favourites among recent works.

About Dhar, Kashyap wrote: “I have known Aditya Dhar since his national award film Boond. It’s his politics. Genuine politics. Agree or disagree with it. Man is honest. Not an opportunist like others.”

While praising the filmmaking craft, Kashyap did point out specific moments in the narrative that he considered overtly political. He flagged two dialogues in particular — one delivered by R Madhavan’s character and another by Ranveer Singh — describing them as “propaganda dialogues.”

He wrote: “If you love The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty or House of Dynamite, they are Oscar-winning propaganda films about the USA. I ignored the two propaganda dialogues and loved the filmmaking and stubbornness of the filmmaker.”

Dhurandhar is built around the story of an Indian spy navigating covert operations in Pakistan-based criminal networks. Its narrative draws inspiration from real events and geopolitical tensions, a factor that has contributed to both its box office success and public debate.

The film has been commercially successful, with global earnings reaching over a thousand crores. Part two of the story is already scheduled for release in March 2026.
