Tomb Raider series gets major boost: Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, and others join Sophie Turner in Prime Video showJoining the previously announced cast are acclaimed actors Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Celia Imrie, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, and several others. The series is based on the hugely popular Tomb Raider video game franchise, which chronicles the globe-trotting adventures of archaeologist and explorer Lara Croft.
Expressing her excitement about stepping into the iconic role, Sophie Turner said, “I’ve been a long-time fan of Tomb Raider and the character of Lara. She has always felt for me, very emboldened in a male dominated world. She’s a fierce female role model!” Turner’s casting as Lara Croft was announced earlier and has already generated significant buzz among fans of both the games and previous film adaptations.
The show is being led by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who serves as creator, writer, executive producer and co-showrunner, alongside Chad Hodge as co-showrunner and executive producer. Sharing her enthusiasm about the ensemble, Waller-Bridge said, “Tomb Raider boasts a plethora of iconic characters. I am thrilled to have been able to bring some personal and fan favourites to the screen while also introducing a few new rascals of our own to the mix. This cast is beyond my wildest dreams!”
Among the newly revealed cast, several actors will be portraying characters drawn directly from the Tomb Raider canon. Martin Bobb-Semple will play Zip, Lara Croft’s long-time tech support and trusted friend. Jason Isaacs steps into the role of Atlas DeMornay, Lara’s uncle, while Bill Paterson will be seen as Winston, the Croft family’s long-serving butler.
The newly announced cast members will be seen portraying a mix of familiar and fresh characters in the Tomb Raider universe. Jack Bannon essays the role of Gerry, Lara Croft’s trusted personal pilot who also doubles up as her ever-reliable snack collector. John Heffernan plays David, an overworked government official who unexpectedly finds himself drawn into Lara’s dangerous and unpredictable world. Celia Imrie appears as Francine, the Head of Advancement at the British Museum, whose priorities revolve around fundraising and social soirées rather than ancient artefacts. Paterson Joseph steps in as Thomas Warner, a senior government figure tasked with cleaning up a situation that has spiralled completely out of control. Adding a formidable edge to the narrative, Sasha Luss plays Sasha, a fierce and highly competitive new adversary who challenges Lara at every turn. Juliette Motamed features as Georgia, a strict, by-the-book curator at the British Museum, firmly committed to what she believes is the ‘proper’ preservation of history. Sigourney Weaver takes on the role of Evelyn Wallis, a powerful and enigmatic figure with an interest in exploiting Lara’s unique abilities, while August Wittgenstein appears as Lukas, an illegal raider whose shared past with Lara runs deeper than expected.
Peter Friedlander, Head of Amazon MGM Studios, summed up the scale of the project, stating, “Tomb Raider has always been defined by bold storytelling and unforgettable characters, and these new cast members bring incredible depth and gravitas to the series. With talents like Sigourney Weaver and Jason Isaacs joining the ensemble, we’re elevating this world in exciting new ways, and can’t wait for our global Prime Video audience to experience this next chapter of Tomb Raider.”
Directed by Jonathan Van Tulleken, who also serves as executive producer, the series is backed by Amazon MGM Studios, Crystal Dynamics and Legendary Television, among others. With a star-studded cast and a strong creative team in place, Tomb Raider is poised to bring Lara Croft back to screens in a bold, expansive new avatar.
