First e-bike rental service in Kerala starts operations at Kozhikode railway station

To offer eco-friendly last-mile connectivity for passengers, the Southern Railway (Palakkad Division) announced the launch of Kerala’s first electric bike (e-bike) rental service at Kozhikode Railway Station. The service has begun operations with all relevant permissions, marking a significant step toward increasing eco-friendly last-mile connections and new mobility options.

The e-bikes are allowed throughout the country, giving passengers complete freedom of movement. Commuters can rent an e-bike for a casual hourly rate of ₹50 per hour. For those needing the service for a significant portion of the day, a ₹500 flat rate covers a 12-hour period and ₹750 covers 24 hours.
To rent an e-bike, you need to provide an original Aadhaar card, a driving licence held for a minimum of two years and a ₹1,000 refundable security deposit. Chargers are included for full-day rentals, and it is possible to travel up to 130 kilometres without needing to recharge. One helmet is included with every rental, while additional helmets are available for ₹50.Every scooter comes with full comprehensive insurance. In the event of an accident, insurance claims will pay the costs, and a daily rental will be charged during the period when the vehicle remains under claim processing, according to Mathrubhumi.

The contractor has been granted the first EV bike rental permit in Kerala, allowing for smooth and regulation-compliant operations.

This initiative will be especially useful for passengers arriving by train from adjacent towns who require convenient local transportation, tourists visiting the city, students and professionals looking for rapid, affordable, and environmentally friendly transportation, or short-distance travellers.

The introduction of EV bikes would guarantee easier transportation within the city, lower travel costs, and enable passengers to save a substantial amount of time due to the increased foot traffic at Kozhikode Railway Station. By promoting zero-emission mobility, the program also helps to create a cleaner urban environment.
