HR88B8888 is now India’s costliest car registration number valued at ₹1.17 crore

There has always been a fascination for fancy numbers in India. Car enthusiasts often go to extraordinary lengths to secure highly sought-after plates. The obsession with VIP number plates reached new heights in India when a fancy vehicle number from Haryana fetched a record-breaking bid on Wednesday, November 26.
The hottest number plate in town is ‘HR88B8888,’ and it carries a price tag of ₹1.17 crore. This makes it the most expensive car registration number ever sold in the country.
The highest bidder’s identity has not been revealed by the authorities, although sources to TOI suggest he is Sudhir, a Hisar resident. The unique appeal of the number lies in its visual appearance, as the uppercase letter ‘B’ closely resembles the digit ‘8’, making the entire sequence appear as a long string of eights, a number considered auspicious in several cultures. The number is structured as follows:

HR: State code for Haryana.

88: Denotes the Regional Transport Office (RTO) codeB: The vehicle series code.

8888: The unique four-digit registration number

Every week, Haryana organises an online auction for VIP or fancy number plates. Bidders can apply for their preferred number between Friday at 5 pm and Monday at 9 am. The bidding game then begins until the results are announced on Wednesday at 5 pm. The bidding is conducted entirely online on the official portal, fancy.parivahan.gov.in.

To participate in the e-auction, an individual has to pay ₹11,000 (₹ 1000 as registration charges and ₹10,000 as security).

The starting price for the registration number ‘HR88B8888’ was set at just ₹50,000. A total of 45 applicants competed for the number, driving the price up rapidly from ₹88 lakh at noon to its final selling price by the evening of November 26.

In an auction in Haryana last week, the registration number ‘HR22W2222’ fetched ₹37.91 lakh.

In April this year, Venu Gopalakrishnan, a tech billionaire from Kerala, bought a VIP license plate, “KL 07 DG 0007,” at ₹45.99 lakh.
