Dia Mirza flags alarming safety gaps for girls in public spaces on National Girl Child Day : Bollywood News

On the occasion of National Girl Child Day and National Tourism Day, actor, producer, and UN Goodwill Ambassador Dia Mirza drew attention to the growing safety concerns faced by girls and women in public spaces, calling for urgent, gender-responsive action. Through a powerful statement, Mirza highlighted how freedom of movement remains deeply unequal, stressing that progress in tourism and urban development cannot be celebrated unless girls feel safe to move independently.

And yet, for far too many of our girls, public spaces come with a ‘safety tax’—a price paid in fear, in lost time, in constantly calculating routes, clothes, hours… and in dreams that quietly shrink before they even take flight.”

Reflecting on the significance of the two national observances, she further added, “As I mark National Girl Child Day and National Tourism Day, I feel this truth deeply: we cannot celebrate movement, exploration, and freedom while so many girls are still navigating the gap between mobility and fear.”

Mirza’s remarks draw a stark contrast between the ideals of exploration and the lived realities of millions of girls and women. Citing national and global data, she pointed out that nearly 40 percent of women in urban India continue to feel unsafe in their own cities, while incidents of harassment involving girls and young women under the age of 24 are on the rise. On a global scale, UN Women estimates that up to 70 percent of women experience harassment in public spaces—figures Mirza described as reflecting a growing “trust deficit” that limits a girl’s world even before it fully opens.

Beyond social inequality, Mirza also framed women’s safety as an economic concern. With tourism contributing close to 10 percent of global GDP, she emphasised that fear-driven exclusion restricts access to education, employment, and opportunity, ultimately slowing sustainable growth.

Calling for tangible change, Mirza advocated for visible and measurable action, including improved lighting, safer public transport systems, and zero tolerance toward harassment. She concluded that cities designed to be safer for girls ultimately become safer, more inclusive spaces for everyone.

Dia Mirza’s statement reinforces the urgent need to view women’s safety not as a peripheral issue, but as a fundamental pillar of social and economic progress.
