Trump threatens Canada with 100% tariffs over its new trade deal with China

President Donald Trump on Saturday (January 24, 2026) threatened to impose a 100% tariff on goods imported from Canada if America’s northern neighbour went ahead with its trade deal with China. Mr. Trump said in a social media post that if Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney “thinks he is going to make Canada a Drop Off Port’ for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken.”

Election Commission uploads names of people on logical discrepancies list

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday (January 26, 2026) uploaded on its website the names of people on the list of SIR logical discrepancies list following an order of the Supreme Court, a poll panel official said. The district electoral officers will now download the list and display it on panchayat bhavans and block offices as directed by the court.

U.S. envoys Kushner, Witkoff in Israel for talks on Gaza: U.S. official

U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff arrived in Israel on Saturday (January 24, 2026), where they were set to hold talks on Gaza’s future, an American official told reporters. Mr. Kushner and Mr. Witkoff were due to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the official said and were working to “determine what are the right next steps, so that we can keep the ceasefire and turn it into a long and enduring peace in Gaza”.

SIR rollout in remaining States soon: CEC Gyanesh Kumar

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Saturday (January 24, 2026) said the special intensive revision of voters’ lists in the remaining States will be rolled out soon, as he described “pure” electoral rolls as the bedrock of democracy. On the eve of the Election Commission’s foundation day — also celebrated as National Voters’ Day — Mr. Kumar said the revision exercise is presently being conducted “smoothly” in 12 States and Union territories.

Nipah scare: RT-PCR tests conducted on bats at Kolkata zoo

Amid concerns over a possible Nipah virus threat, bats at Kolkata’s Alipore Zoo are undergoing RT-PCR testing to rule out infection, an official said on Saturday (January 24, 2026).
