The first biggie of 2026, Border 2, has emerged as a blockbuster. The film had a healthy opening and then saw huge jumps over the extended weekend. Thankfully, the Sunny Deol-starrer didn’t fall on Tuesday, which was a non-holiday, which proved that it’ll have a long run at the ticket window. We spoke to trade experts to understand what worked in favour of the film.

There’s NO ONE like him; he’s been discovered and is being LOVED…very intelligently, the makers used the ‘weapons’ of Border in Border 2 – the songs”Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “There are various factors – the recall value, the emotions attached to the first film, the songs, the star cast, etc. Sunny Deol has also been a major part of the success of Border (1997). Also, the way Anurag Singh directed it; he’s a fantastic storyteller and it has been proven in the past as well.”

Distributor and exhibitor Raj Bansal added, “The patriotic flavour has gone in its favour. People like seeing Sunny Deol bash up Pakistani soldiers and shout at the top of his voice. In such scenes, I have seen moviegoers going gaga. I feared that the film would drop after 3-4 days, but I was wrong. Even on Tuesday, the film was very strong.”

Trade analyst Atul Mohan agreed, “The weekend was encouraging. The India-Pakistan sentiment, positive reports and Sunny Deol’s casting worked. The start was slow, but later on, it picked up as the word of mouth worked its magic.”

Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Purnia, Bihar, explained, “The 1997 film is a classic. That was one of the most loved films of Indian cinema and also that of Sunny Deol. Secondly, Sunny is on a resurgence and people are enjoying it. There’s no one like Sunny Deol; he’s been discovered and is being loved. Very intelligently, the makers used the ‘weapons’ of Border in Border 2 – the songs. They were not relegated to the background or in the end, or opening credits. The makers gave full respect to the songs.”

He added, “In the previous film, Sunny Deol was joined by Akshaye Khanna, Suniel Shetty and Jackie Shroff. In Border 2, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh and Ahan Shetty feature alongside Sunny. As a result, there was no disconnect of the brand for the audience from the previous experience. Nevertheless, the audience was a bit in the wait-and-watch mode. It opened at Rs. 32 crores, but in my opinion, it should have done better. But once the word spread, it grew with each passing day. From Rs. 32 crores, it jumped to Rs. 63 crores. So, the numbers nearly doubled in 4 days. That is quite an achievement.”

Taran Adarsh further said, “Entertainers are great fun to watch but when you leave a mark in a serious film, that really speaks for itself. The performances of all the actors worked well while the drama was recreated very well. The balance was beautifully done – the first half was devoted to the families and how even they got impacted. The war portions in the second half were also very well executed. Overall, it was a well-packaged war drama.”

Vishek Chauhan remarked that the second part was made just like the first part and this has added to its mass appeal, “J P Dutta sir must have designed the screenplay of Border in the early 90s. Those were the days when the makers used to write films keeping the common man in mind. Border 2 is also a war film for aam aadmi. Meanwhile, another war film, 120 Bahadur (2025), was released. It is not a bad film and the same goes for Ikkis (2026). But these are not war films for aam aadmi. There’s a template for commercial cinema – there should be songs, romance, mother, wife, villain, dialogues, humour, masala, etc. All these factors were present in Border 2. Though it has a war setting, it has all the masala. Hence, families are coming in hordes and they are loving it.”
