ENG vs WI, T20 World Cup 2026: Rutherford, spinners help West Indies trump England

Sherfane Rutherford and Jason Holder laid the platform with the bat before the spin duo of Gudakesh Motie and Roston Chase sealed the deal, as the West Indies earned its second consecutive Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 victory with a commanding 30-run win over England at the Wankhede Stadium.

Asked to bat, West Indies posted 196 for six, thanks largely to Rutherford’s unbeaten 76 (42b, 2×4, 7×6). His 61-run stand off just 32 deliveries with Holder (33, 17b, 1×4, 4×6) lifted the total from competitive to imposing.

The pair was watchful against leg-spinner Adil Rashid but went hard at the seamers in the closing overs. Rutherford raised his fifty with a pick-up over deep square leg off Jamie Overton, while Holder smashed Sam Curran for three sixes in the 17th over. A dropped return catch by Rashid when Rutherford was on 56 proved costly as the final six overs yielded rich dividends.

AS IT HAPPENED | ENG vs WI Highlights: West Indies beats England to register second straight win

England began briskly, racing to 67 for one in the Powerplay with Phil Salt taking the attack to Holder, tonking him for three sixes and as many fours in the second over. But the innings unravelled in the middle overs. Chase had Jos Buttler hole out, and Motie then turned the screws — deceiving Tom Banton in flight, inducing a return catch from captain Harry Brook, and producing a quicker one to castle a set Jacob Bethell.

Though Curran fought a lone battle, England was bowled out for 166 in 19 overs, handing the Caribbean side a rousing start in front of a 21,000-strong crowd.
