A swashbuckling 61 off 24 balls from Ishan Kishan at the top and Hardik Pandya’s 52 off 28 in the closing stages got India to 209 for nine in its 20 overs. This was only the fourth instance of India crossing the 200-run mark in the T20 World Cup.
Its highest in a T20 World Cup match came in the inaugural edition in 2007, when it posted 218 for four against England in Durban, the game where Yuvraj Singh hit six sixes in an over.
Suryakumar Yadav’s side was on course to break the record on Thursday, stationed at 199 for four after the 18th over. However, a slew of wickets in the last two overs restricted the final total.
The side’s second-highest World Cup total stands at 210 for two, which came against Afghanistan during the 2021 edition.
