T20 World Cup 2026: Definitely a few tears in the boys’ eyes, says Italy coach Davison after win over Nepal


As Italy stunned Nepal to pull off its first win in the T20 World Cup, head coach John Davison admitted that this historic victory means a lot for his team.

“What does it mean to Italian cricket? This will be front page news in a lot of countries and a lot of publications in Italy I would imagine. And for us to get that sort of exposure (is huge) and maybe we will knock off the Winter Olympics coverage to the back page of the sports pages. That would be unbelievable for cricket in the country,” Davison said with a smile, adding: “It would just get us some attention…”

Not many expected Davison’s men to bounce back after going down to Scotland in the tournament opener last week. But a disciplined Italy created history. “There were definitely a few tears in the boy’s eyes, so it definitely meant a lot to a lot for the guys out there, particularly the Mosca brothers… It was a phenomenal effort,” Davison said.

“That day (against Scotland), nothing went our way, and then today, everything went our way. It was a reflection on how brave we were in this game, as opposed to our first game, where we were a bit tentative…”
