The initiative is part of CRUT’s plan to increase women’s participation in its operational fleet and support Odisha’s transition to electric public transport.
The training included practical driving sessions on EKA electric buses and technical modules led by company engineers. Participants were trained in regenerative braking, heavy vehicle manoeuvring, EV control systems, start-up and shutdown procedures, battery systems, energy management, charging protocols, and high-voltage safety practices. They also toured assembly lines, testing facilities and charging infrastructure to understand vehicle manufacturing and maintenance. Safety training covered defensive driving, road safety rules, passenger safety management and emergency response procedures.
All 20 recruits completed the programme and were assessed as ready to join CRUT’s electric bus fleet. Organisers said the model could be expanded to other states and transport operators to support gender inclusion and the growth of India’s electric mobility workforce.
Ritika Mehta, Group President, EKA Mobility, said, “This programme goes beyond technical training; it is about generating opportunities, instilling confidence, and preparing women to lead the future generation of public transportation.”
Vivek Kalkar, Director, Travel Time, said, “This programme was carefully structured to ensure that participants were not only trained to operate electric buses but were fully prepared for the responsibilities of public transport driving… The result is a group of women drivers who are operationally ready and equipped to contribute to safer, more dependable city bus services from day one.”
