Maruti Suzuki Gujarat rail project first to earn carbon credits by moving cars by train

Maruti Suzuki India Limited, on Wednesday, said its in-plant railway siding at its Gujarat facility has been registered as the world’s first Modal Shift Transportation Project under Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) program.According to the company, the project is expected to generate about 1.7 lakh carbon credits over a 10-year period from FY2023-24 to FY2032-33 by shifting vehicle dispatches from road to rail.

Emission reductions were calculated using the AM0090 methodology under the Clean Development Mechanism of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. After independent verification, Verra will issue the carbon credits under its VCS program.
Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO at Maruti Suzuki, said, “This is a proud moment for Maruti Suzuki as our Gujarat in-plant railway siding is recognised as the world’s first Verra-registered Modal Shift in Transportation project.”

Maruti Suzuki claims that it has dispatched more than 6 lakh vehicles from the Gujarat railway siding since operations began in March 2023.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the in-plant railway siding at the company’s Hansalpur facility in Gujarat via video conferencing in March 2024 under the GatiShakti program.
