Konkona Sen Sharma on why accused avoids melodrama: “The subject needed weight and depth”Discussing the subject’s seriousness, Konkona shared that the story demanded a grounded treatment rather than exaggerated emotions. She said, “one because I I like I felt the subject needed a certain kind of weight and depth with which it can be told. Uh and that can come purely if you keep it far more uh closer to reality than you know resorting to sensationalism or you know just making a very big broad statement. High on melodrama.”
She further pointed out that the film’s international setting also influenced this stylistic decision. Since the story is rooted outside India and aimed at a global audience, the narrative needed to remain accessible across cultures. She explained, “Also because we were basing the film in the UK. Yeah. Um and we’re hoping it gets a little bit of international audience as well. You know, it’s going to be released globally on Netflix. You have to cater to some sensibilities all across which uh so that’s also there.”
Finally, Konkona emphasised that the understated tone also reflects her own artistic sensibilities and filmmaking style. She added, “And then thirdly, I like personally those films and it’s my style, you know, a little bit of restraint and yeah, subtly told,”
Together, her comments highlight a conscious move toward realism, cultural sensitivity, and understated storytelling — choices that shape the film’s tone and differentiate it from more melodramatic narratives often seen in mainstream cinema. With its global release on Netflix, Accused aims to connect with audiences through nuance rather than noise.
