T20 World Cup 2026: Harry Brook rues dropped catch of Sanju Samson as India cruises into final

Harry Brook stood there in disbelief. Around him, the England team wore the same stunned expression.

A straightforward chance at mid-on – the kind fielders hold on to nine times out of ten – had gone down.

Brook had spilled a dolly, handing Sanju Samson a crucial lifeline when the Indian batter was on 15, and India had just lost Abhishek Sharma early in the innings.

Up until that moment, England seemed to be gaining the upper hand. Jofra Archer had been testing Samson with pace and bounce, occasionally beating him and even responding with a fuller delivery after being struck for boundaries.

The duel had its moments, and it felt like the momentum was gradually tilting England’s way. Another wicket then could have tightened its grip on the semifinal. Instead, Brook’s dropped catch changed the course of the evening.

Samson seized the opportunity with both hands. Regaining his rhythm quickly, he launched a counterattack that England struggled to contain. By the time he was dismissed, the wicketkeeper-batter had produced a blistering 89 — an innings that eventually powered India into the T20 World Cup final.

Brook admitted later that the missed chance had cost England dearly.

“Yeah, catches win matches, don’t they? Unfortunately, it didn’t stay in my hands,” Brook said. “It’s just one of those things. Unfortunately, I didn’t catch it, and he played a very, very good innings as well and arguably won them the game.”

As Samson’s innings gathered pace, Brook admitted the moment kept playing in his mind.

“Obviously, it’s in the back of your mind as the game goes on,” he said. “I kept looking at the scoreboard and he was piling the runs on. I was like, ‘I’m going to have to get an 80 or 90 tonight.’ Not ideal, but it has happened now.”

Despite the disappointment, Brook said he was proud of the way England had played throughout the tournament. He also had special praise for Jacob Bethell, whose superb century in the chase ultimately went in vain.

On a night when small margins made a big difference, that one dropped catch proved decisive.
