T20 World Cup 2026: Suryakumar Yadav lauds bowlers’ death-overs squeeze against England

India captain Suryakumar Yadav heaped praise on his bowlers after his team’s nervy seven-run win over England at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday in the semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2026.

England needed a massive 254 runs to win but Jacob Bethell’s century kept it in the hunt. With 61 needed off the last four overs, England stumbled in its attempt due to a slew of yorkers from India’s pacers at the death.

Bumrah initiated the squeeze by giving away just six runs from the 18th over. Hardik followed it up with nine runs and wicket in the 19th over, leaving England to chase 30 off the last six balls. Shivam Dube gave away 22 in that over, enough for India to eke out a win.

“They were always in the game, always in the chase. But the way Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and other guys [Hardik Pandya] pulled it back was unbelievable. Special bowling performance. Oh my god. Need to give a little credit to our fielding coach T. Dilip as well,” Suryakumar said.

The Indian captain also emphasised the importance of Sanju Samson’s 42-ball 89 which allowed India to put up enough runs on the board. This was the 31-year-old’s second straight half century in this T20 World Cup.

“Samson knew what he wanted to do. The team required a big innings from him and it was due. Even after the wicket fell he knew the wicket was good,” Suryakumar said.

The result puts India one win away from becoming the first team to lift back-to-back T20 World Cup titles. Standing in the way is New Zealand, which qualified for the final after defeating South Africa covincingly.

Speaking about the anticipation around the title showdown, Suryakumar Yadav said, “In India, going for the title, there will be pressure, there will be nerves, but the boys will be excited as well.”
