The 31-year-old ended the tournament with 321 runs from five innings and was India’s highest scorer. He becomes just the third Indian to win the award after Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah.
The Kerala batter also completed his remarkable turnaround story that saw him get dropped from the lineup before getting his place back and delivering at the top.
He started with an unbeaten 97 against West Indies in the must-win Super Eight match against West Indies. He scored 89 runs in the semifinal and the final.
He also became India’s highest run-scorer in a single edition of the T20 World Cup, overtaking Kohli’s record of 319 runs from 2014.
