In case of wrong transaction or fraud with UPI, it is possible to get refund by filing a complaint on NPCI, RBI and cyber crime portal. Taking quick action can get the money back.

What is the difference between transfer to wrong account and fraud?
In the era of Digital India, UPI (Unified Payment Interface) has made payments very easy. But with this ease, incidents of fraud and wrong transactions are also increasing. Many times people accidentally transfer money to the wrong UPI ID, mobile number or bank account, or become victims of fraud like phishing, fake QR codes. It is natural to be nervous in such a situation, but the good news is that by taking immediate action you can get your money back. There is a strong system in place under the rules of National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and Reserve Bank of India (RBI), in which it is possible to get a refund by filing a complaint through government supported portals.
First of all, understand that there can be two types of situations where money goes to the wrong account – one is unintentional transfer to the wrong UPI address (which is a technical mistake), and the other is fraud (like a scammer makes you make payment fraudulently).
The refund process is almost the same in both the cases, but time matters a lot. According to the ‘Zero Liability’ rule of RBI, if you report the fraud within 3 days, then your liability becomes zero and the bank has to refund. NPCI also gives priority to such complaints under ‘Dispute Redressal Mechanism’.
What to do immediately?
- First of all, go to the UPI app through which the transaction was done (like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, Bhim) and select ‘Report’ or ‘Dispute’ option. Maintain transaction ID (UTR number), date, amount and screenshots.
- Contact the customer care of your bank. Many banks start reversal requests immediately.
- If the problem is not resolved within 24-48 hours, call NPCI helpline number 1800-120-1740. It is toll-free and dedicated to complaints related to UPI.
- Most important step: Visit the official Dispute Redressal Mechanism Portal of NPCI (npci.org.in/what-we-do/upi/dispute-redressal-mechanism).
- Here in the ‘Register Complaint’ section, fill the transaction details – select transaction type (Person to Person), issue category (Incorrectly transferred to another account or Fraudulent transaction). Note down the Complaint Reference Number (CRN), through which you can track the status. NPCI investigates and gives instructions to the concerned bank, and in most valid cases, the refund is received in 7-30 days.
- For additional security in fraud cases, also register a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in) or call the 1930 helpline.
This government portal gives priority to financial fraud and can initiate a police investigation.
Keep in mind: The sooner you complain, the greater the chances of a refund. In the 2025-26 guidelines of NPCI and RBI, new features like name display and better tracking have been added to make UPI more secure.
If there is no resolution even within 30 days, contact the RBI Banking Ombudsman. Instead of panic, take smart action – these government portals and helplines are made for you. Digital payments should be safe, and to prevent fraud, always double-check your UPI ID and avoid unknown links. Your money can be returned – just take the right steps at the right time.
