New Delhi. These days, a video is going viral on social media, in which it is being claimed that a particular stove can be run for six months by adding only half a liter of water. It is shown in the video that food is being cooked by extracting hydrogen gas from water and there will be no need of LPG cylinder for this.

This video is said to be related to the Ashram of Art of Living Foundation located in Bengaluru, where a person is seen demonstrating this technique. The claim is that hydrogen can be made from water and used as fuel and the gas can be produced for a long time with very little water.

It is not easy to extract hydrogen from water

According to science, water contains both the elements hydrogen and oxygen. But to separate them, a process called electrolysis has to be done, which requires electricity or external energy. Experts say that more energy cannot be obtained by burning it than the energy required to extract hydrogen from water. Therefore, running the stove for a long time without additional energy by just adding water is not in accordance with scientific rules.

What does the simple mathematics of energy say?

If the total energy of hydrogen produced from half a liter of water is added, then this quantity is very limited. A typical family uses a lot of energy from an LPG cylinder every month for cooking. In such a situation, getting gas from only half a liter of water for several months does not match even the simple mathematics of energy. This is why scientists view this claim with skepticism.

Research on hydrogen technology is being done in the world

Hydrogen is being seen as the fuel of the future all over the world and many countries are working on it. But the current technology requires large plants, electricity and complex systems to produce hydrogen. Till now, no proven example of such technology has come to light that a gas can be continuously produced from water without any external energy and the stove can run for months.
