RC Transfer Online: How to transfer RC of car or bike to your name sitting at home? Know the complete process

Buying a used car or bike is now easier than ever, but many people still get intimidated by the paperwork. Often people make rounds of RTO agents to get RC (Registration Certificate) transferred and pay them thousands of rupees as commission.

In today’s digital era, the Government of India Transport Services Portal has made this process so simple that you can complete the RC transfer process from your mobile or laptop sitting at home. Let us know the step-by-step method on how you can get the RC of the purchased vehicle in your name without bribing any agent.

First of all let us know about the important documents. Before starting the process of RC transfer, make sure that you have digital copies (scanned) of the following documents. If not, collect them first. See the complete list-

1. Original RC: Original registration certificate held by the seller.
2. Form 29 and 30: These are the most important forms for transfer of ownership.
3. Insurance Certificate: Vehicle insurance should be valid.
4. Pollution Certificate (PUC): Carry a valid PUC certificate.
5. Address Proof: Keep the buyer’s Aadhar card, voter ID or electricity bill.
6. PAN Card: Keep the PAN card of both the buyer and the seller with you.
7. Print of chassis number: Impression of chassis number taken on paper with pencil.

How to transfer?

After collecting these documents you can start the process. The step-by-step process of online RC transfer is as follows-

• First of all, the official website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India (parivahan.gov.in) go to.
• on the homepage Online Services inside tab Vehicle Related Services Click on. After this select your state where the vehicle is registered.
• Now a new page will open. Enter your vehicle registration number here and Progress Click on.
• After this you will see many options, among which you will Transfer of Ownership Must be selected.
• Enter the last 5 digits of the vehicle’s chassis number. After this an OTP will come on your registered mobile number. After entering this, complete details of the vehicle will appear on the screen.
• Now you have to fill the details of the buyer (yourself), like name, address and mobile number. In this phase you Transfer of Ownership Fees will have to be paid.

RC transfer fees may vary depending on the state and type of vehicle (two-wheeler or four-wheeler). You can make online payment through net banking, debit card or UPI. Don’t forget to download the receipt after payment.

What to do after paying the fees?

Once you have applied online and deposited the fees, start the next part of the process, which is as follows-

Upload Documents: In some states there is a facility to upload all the documents online. Upload Form 29, 30 and other documents if it is available in your state. You may also have to go to RTO for physical verification.

Book an Appointment: In many RTOs you may have to take time for physical verification. The option of ‘Book Appointment’ is available on the portal itself, select it.

Go to RTO (if necessary): On the chosen date you may have to go to the RTO with the signed documents of the buyer and the seller. However, under Contactless Services, now in many states there is no need to go to RTO and all the work is done through Aadhaar-based e-KYC.

What things should be kept in mind?

It is also important to take care of some things during this process, if you do not take care of those things, then you can get entangled in the legal process. While transferring the RC of the vehicle, keep the following things in mind –

• Time Limit: Application for RC transfer should be made within 30 days of purchasing the vehicle. Fine may be imposed for delay.
• Car from another state: If you are buying a car from another state, you will first have to obtain NOC from the RTO of that state.
• Bank Loan: If there is a loan on the vehicle, then first you will have to complete the process of Hypothecation Termination by taking NOC from the bank, only after that the RC will be transferred.

Summary: After understanding this process, you will not need to pay extra Rs 2,000 to 5,000 to the middlemen. Government fees are very low. Generally, one has to pay between Rs 300-500 for a two-wheeler and Rs 600-1000 for a car.
