Chinnaswamy Stadium Reopens for IPL 2026: Ticket Rules, Metro Access, Security Explained

Cricket is set to return to Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium after nearly a year, but this is not just another IPL venue reset. The reopening comes after a tragic disruption, infrastructure overhaul, and a complete rethink of crowd management.

Here’s everything fans need to know before attending IPL 2026 matches at the stadium.

Why was M. Chinnaswamy Stadium closed?

The last competitive match at the venue was an abandoned IPL 2025 fixture between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders on May 17, 2025.

Less than three weeks later, on June 4, a stampede during RCB’s title celebrations outside the stadium led to the deaths of 11 people. The incident forced authorities to halt cricketing activities and review safety protocols at the venue.

After months of structural upgrades and compliance checks, a government-appointed expert committee has now cleared the stadium to host IPL 2026 matches.

How many matches will RCB play at Chinnaswamy in IPL 2026?

Royal Challengers Bengaluru will play:

5 home matches at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium

2 matches in Raipur

The first fixtures in Bengaluru are scheduled for March 28 and April 5, 2026.

How to reach M. Chinnaswamy Stadium for IPL matches?

Authorities are actively pushing fans toward public transport to avoid congestion.

Metro is the primary mode of access:

  • Nearest stations: Cubbon Park and MG Road
  • Additional metro coaches will run on match days
  • Parking facilities are available at metro entry points

Match tickets will include a metro pass, allowing seamless travel across Bengaluru.

What is the new IPL ticket system at Chinnaswamy?

A fully digital system has been introduced:

  • Only QR code-based e-tickets will be accepted
  • No physical tickets will be issued
  • Tickets are non-transferable
  • QR codes will be generated 3 hours before the match

Entry gates and crowd movement plan

To avoid bottlenecks:

  • Entry via Queen’s Road only
  • 7 gates and 28 entry points operational
  • Gates widened to 6 metres for smoother movement

What are the security arrangements at the stadium?

Security has been significantly upgraded after last year’s incident.

Surveillance and policing

  • 500+ CCTV cameras installed
  • AI-enabled monitoring systems to track crowd density

Emergency preparedness

  • 9 ambulances on standby
  • 4 fully equipped medical centres inside the stadium
