With the right information, you can diagnose the problem yourself and fix it.
The quality of the bulb may be weak
The biggest reason is cheap and poor LED bulbs. Very cheap bulbs are available in the market which do not provide good light. In these, the LED chips are weak or the driver circuit does not work properly. Therefore, while buying, always choose a good brand (like Philips, Syska, Bajaj etc.). Check the lumens (brightness) written on the packet. A 9 watt bulb should give at least 800-900 lumens of light.
voltage problem
In India the electricity voltage often fluctuates. If the voltage is low (below 200V) then the LED bulb is not able to provide full illumination. Many times voltage drop occurs due to old wiring or long wires in the house.
Solution: Compare with the bulb in the other room. If there is a problem only at one place then get the wiring checked by an electrician.
dimmer switch or old switch
If you have installed an old dimmer switch then the new LED bulb does not work properly with it. LED bulbs must be dimmable, otherwise the light will dim or flicker. Solution: Install LED compatible dimmer switch or install a simple switch.
overheating (heat problems)
LED bulb reduces its brightness when it gets too hot. If the bulb is installed in a closed fitting or a small shade, then the air cannot circulate and the heat increases. Due to this the light becomes lighter.
Solution: Place the bulb in an open place where air can reach well.
Loose connection or wrong fitting
Sometimes the bulb becomes loose in the holder or the contact points become dirty. Due to this, current does not reach properly and the light gets reduced.
Solution: Remove the bulb and reinstall it properly. Clean the holder.
Wrong watt bulb or use in wrong place
The wattage of the bulb should be chosen according to the size of the room. Installing small bulbs in a big room results in less lighting. Also, if the bulb is warm white (yellow), it may appear less bright than cool light (white).
What to do if the problem persists?
- First try the bulb in some other holder.
- If problem still persists, take it back to the shop (warranty is there).
- Buy a good quality bulb and read the lumens and watts given on the packet carefully.
- If necessary, call an electrician to get the wiring and voltage checked.
Don’t worry if the new LED bulb gives dim light. In most cases, there is one of the simple reasons mentioned above. With a little research and choosing the right bulb, you can enjoy good, clean and bright light in your home.
LED bulbs are a good way to save electricity, but the right thing and proper use is important. Next time while shopping, choose a good quality bulb and not just a cheap one. This will save your money and provide you with complete lighting.
