PlayStation Plus becomes expensive: Sony increases subscription price

Once again a big change has been seen in the world of gaming. Sony has announced an increase in the prices of its PlayStation Plus subscription. These new prices will be applicable to new customers from May 20. The company has cited ‘ongoing market conditions’ as the reason for this increase.

As per the new price, the 1-month Essential plan of PlayStation Plus is now priced at $10.99 (approximately ₹1,058) in the US, whereas earlier it was priced at $9.99 (approximately ₹960). At the same time, the 3 month plan will now be available for $27.99 (approximately ₹2,700), which was earlier $24.99 (approximately ₹2,400).

Prices have also been increased in Europe and UK. The monthly plans there will start from EUR 9.99 and GBP 7.99. The three-month plans have reached EUR 27.99 and GBP 21.99 respectively.

Relief to existing users, but not completely
Sony has made it clear that these increased prices will be applicable only to new users. That is, those who are already subscribers can avail the service at the old prices only until they change or renew their plan.

However, the situation is slightly different for countries like India and Türkiye. Here the existing users will not get this protection completely, due to which there is a possibility of further changes in the prices in the coming time.

Why were the prices increased?
In recent times, there has been a continuous increase in the prices of both hardware and subscriptions in the gaming industry. Keeping this trend in mind, this decision of Sony is also being considered a step in this direction.

However, after this decision, mixed reactions are being seen in the gaming community. Some users say that paying separately for online multiplayer is already an expensive deal. Some people are comparing it to Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass, where prices have been frozen or reduced in many areas.

What to expect next?
At present, Sony has not clarified whether this increase will also apply to other tiers like PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe or not.
