What is Google doing? Google has done this research in collaboration with America’s University of California San Diego. This project has been named ‘Phone Cluster Computing’.
In this technique, those parts of the old smartphone which are not needed, like screen, camera, battery and external body are removed. After this, only the motherboard is left, which contains important parts like processor, storage and memory.
These motherboards are connected together and run on a Linux based system. For this, tools like Kubernetes are used, which helps in managing large cloud systems.
How can data centers be built?
According to Google’s research, 25 to 50 old smartphones together can provide the computing capacity of an advanced server for certain tasks. If thousands of old phones are connected together, they can meet needs like cloud services, research projects and education platforms.
According to the report, in future there is a plan to create a big computing cluster by connecting about 2,000 old Pixel smartphones.
Students and research will benefit
University of California San Diego wants to use this technology in courses like Systems Programming and Parallel Computing. This will give students an opportunity to work on large computing systems at low cost.
The environment will also benefit
Every year crores of smartphones become useless and become part of electronic waste. If this experiment of Google is successful, then old phones can get a new life. This will reduce the need to build new servers and the impact on the environment will also reduce.
This means that in future your old smartphone may not just become a useless device but can also become a part of a small data center.
