If we talk about cities, there are very few houses where there is no AC. It has become a necessity for every home in the scorching heat. In such a situation, the biggest matter of concern is that why are the ACs bursting? What is the defect or mistake happening with the ACs which explode like a bomb and spread devastation, that they are becoming fatal? What is the reason behind AC blast?
According to an estimate, in the last two years there have been more than 100 deaths due to AC explosion while the number of injured is also very high. It is being seen that as soon as the temperature goes above 42-44 degrees Celsius, the incidents of AC blast start increasing. If you notice, in the last one month alone, many incidents of AC fire have come to light.
What are the reasons for blast in AC and what precautions should be taken so that such incidents do not happen with AC.
Let us know what is the reason behind AC bursting? What other precautions should be taken so that such incidents can be avoided?
Fire incidents due to AC explosion
- . 15 children died in a fire caused by an AC blast in a coaching class in Aliganj, Lucknow.
- . Vivek Vihar (Delhi): A massive fire broke out in a residential building at night due to AC explosion, in which 9 people died tragically.
- . Hauz Khas (Delhi): An 80-year-old former IAS officer died of suffocation after a fire broke out in the indoor AC unit of his house following a blast.
- . A sudden fire broke out in Noida’s Lotus Boulevard Society due to AC explosion. However, no one died in this.
Main reasons for air conditioner fire
- Gas leakage is also a major cause of AC blast. If gas starts leaking from the condenser unit of AC, it becomes a big problem. When the gas reduces, the pressure on the condenser increases. Due to this, the unit starts overheating, which increases the risk of fire.
- Sometimes dirty coils also cause this. Condenser plays the most important role in cooling the AC. It extracts heat from the air. If the condenser coils become clogged with dirt, dust or jam, the normal flow of gas stops.
The result is that the condenser becomes very hot and the risk of fire increases significantly. - If the AC is used continuously for several hours or it is extremely hot outside, the pressure on the AC compressor increases. At the same time, if the heat is not able to come out, then the temperature and pressure of the compressor increases a lot, due to which it can burst.
- Incidents of blast in AC also occur due to voltage fluctuations. Some people run the AC by connecting wires to the extension board, while others run the AC without a stabilizer, the effect of this is that when the voltage suddenly increases or decreases, the wiring of the AC gets affected and the wires start burning. Apart from this, increase or decrease in voltage also affects the compressor and due to overheating or heavy pressure, the compressor bursts.
- Cases of fire in houses also occur due to old wiring in the house or lack of sufficient electricity load. If the wiring in a 20-25 year old house is old and the load of the meter is also less, whereas if the load of AC is added without increasing the load of the meter and changing the wiring, then the possibility of short circuit in the house also increases.
AC does not blast, what should be done?
. Whenever there is extreme heat, always keep the AC compressor in the shade. Keep in mind that there should be good air circulation around the compressor and condenser unit, so that the unit does not get too hot.
. Keep the air filter clean. This reduces the load on AC.
. Install the window by tilting it slightly outwards, so that water can drain properly.
. Never use an extension cord to operate the AC. Plug it directly into your circuit.
. If your AC ever catches fire, unplug it immediately and get its wiring checked regularly.
. Take special care while filling gas in the AC and use the right gas in the right quantity.
. Leave at least 2 feet of space around the AC unit, so that air can flow properly.
. Call a technician from time to time to get the wiring, loose connections and other possible faults checked, so that the problem can be caught early.
. In extreme heat, do not run the AC continuously for several hours, set a timer in it. Let the AC compressor rest for some time.
. If the AC gas is leaking and it is cooling less then do not run it forcibly, immediately call the AC mechanic.
