Despite the addition of India Test players Devdutt Padikkal and Mohammed Siraj to the South squad for the Duleep final, their line-up is lopsided, with only one specialist opening batter in N Jagadeesan. On the eve of the final, South captain Tilak Varma defended their selection, suggesting Ricky Bhui, who is the team’s vice-captain, could do the job as an opener. Bhui had also opened the batting in the semi-finals in Bengaluru, managing scores of 5 and 42.
