England opener Emilio Gay was out for a 12-ball duck playing for a Professional County Club Select XI on the opening day of a warm-up fixture against Pakistan in Beckenham on Wednesday.

Pakistan paceman Mohammad Abbas took 3-37 on the first day of three, including the wickets of Gay and James Rew, as the PCC Select XI slumped to 69-3.

But captain Tom Haines’s quickfire 51 and further half-centuries from Caleb Falconer, Saif Zaib and Matt Fisher helped the host recover to 305 all out in Kent before Pakistan closed on 44-0.

This match is being played ahead of next week’s series opener between England and Pakistan at Headingley — the first of a three-Test campaign.

Gay is looking to prove his fitness after suffering a shoulder injury playing for Durham in the One-Day Cup last week, but was out at the end of the third over.

Haines’s fifty helped the PCC Select XI get back into the match, with Falconer making 59 and Zaib compiling 65 before England paceman Fisher struck a valuable 62 not out batting at No 10.

Pakistan openers Azan Awais (15 not out) and Imam-ul-Haq (26 not out) held firm until the close.
