Maruti WagonR crosses 35 lakh production in India, joins Alto and Swift among few models


Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., on Thursday, revealed that its hatchback WagonR has crossed a cumulative production milestone of 35 lakh units since its launch in India in December 1999.With this milestone, WagonR joins the Alto and Swift in crossing 35 lakh units of cumulative production. The model is currently manufactured at Maruti Suzuki’s facilities in Gurgaon and Manesar in Haryana.
Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO at Maruti Suzuki India Limited,  said, “This achievement is not just a production milestone, but reflects the enduring love and confidence that generations of customers have shown towards brand WagonR.”
The WagonR timeline includes several key developments. The model was launched in India in 1999. A Duo LPG version was introduced in 2004. The second generation was launched in 2010, the same year the CNG variant was introduced.In 2015, the WagonR was offered with Auto Gear Shift, dual airbags and ABS. The VXi+ variant was introduced in 2017. The third generation was launched in 2019. A minor model change was introduced in 2022.

Globally, the Suzuki WagonR was first introduced in Japan in September 1993. It was developed as a semi-bonnet style mini wagon. The model is manufactured in Japan, India, Hungary and Indonesia.

It is sold in more than 75 countries and regions, including Japan, India and Europe. In August 2025, the Suzuki WagonR crossed accumulated global sales of 1 crore units.

The latest WagonR is built on the fifth-generation HEARTECT platform. It comes with six airbags as standard. Safety features include Anti-lock Braking System with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Electronic Stability Program.

The car also offers a 17.78 cm touchscreen SmartPlay Studio infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity and voice commands.
