U-19 World Cup 2026: India beats USA in rain-curtailed contest

India got its ICC Under-19 World Cup 2026 campaign underway with a six-wicket victory (DLS Method) against USA at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo on Thursday.

Ayush Mhatre won the toss and opted to bowl, and pacer Henil Patel made the most of bounce and movement off the surface to pick a five-wicket haul.

For USA, Nitish Sudini waged a lonely battle with his 52-ball 36 and dragged his team beyond the 100-run mark. But he had little support from the other end and USA folded for 107 in the 36th over.

The start of the second innings was delayed due to rain. Once it began, India lost Vaibhav Suryavanshi early, who was castled by Ritvik Appidi on just two runs while attempting a heave across the line.

A slew of boundaries from Mhatre got India to 21 runs after four overs but rain forced another interruption in play. After the resumption, the target was revised to 96 runs and the innings reduced to 37 overs. But the chase was hardly straightforward as India lost two quick wickets, with Vedant Trivedi and Mhatre falling in the space of three deliveries.

But Abhigyan Kundu ensured the game did not slip away from India’s grasp, scoring 42 off 41 balls and securing the victory in the 18th over.
