In a recent interview with ETimes, actor Imran Khan spoke openly about the issue of rising star fees in Bollywood and has said that it just doesn’t make sense. Speaking from the perspective of a producer, Imran explained how unrealistic actor remunerations are harming the industry.

Imran Khan calls out stars for charging huge fees, says, “It just doesn’t make sense”Imran Imran, who recently appeared in a cameo in Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos said that he has seen situations where an actor’s fee is higher than the actual cost of making the film. “When an actor charges Rs 40 crore and the film’s budget is Rs 30 crore, it just doesn’t make sense,” he said, adding that such decisions make it extremely difficult for a film to recover costs. Imran further stated that actors should believe in the films they choose. “If you don’t have faith in the project, why are you doing it?” he remarked, calling massive upfront fees a short-sighted approach that puts pressure on producers and distributors.

The actor also cited Aamir Khan as an example, saying that his uncle has never charged exorbitant upfront fees. “What I was taught by my uncle, Aamir, and what I have seen in the generations that preceded me, is that actors would invest in the film in their own way. I don’t mean opening their wallet and putting money into the film, but taking personal responsibility and ownership of the project.” Imran said noting that this shows confidence in the film and keeps budgets under control.

Imran concluded by saying that a more responsible fee structure is needed for the industry to function sustainably.
