Durai Vaiko urges Centre to develop Manapparai SIPCOT industrial park as a semi-conductor manufacturing hub

Tiruchi MP Durai Vaiko has urged the Union government to develop the SIPCOT industrial park near Manapparai as a dedicated electronics and semi-conductor manufacturing hub.

In a representation submitted to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday, Mr. Durai Vaiko said the region had adequate lands, skilled workforce, and and an industrial base making it suitable for inclusion under the India Semiconductor Mission Phase 2.0 for electronics and semiconductor development announced in the Union Budget 2026.

“Developing the Manapparai SIPCOT Park would help generate employment, strengthen MSMEs and contribute to balanced industrial growth in central Tamil Nadu,” he said. Mr. Durai Vaiko had raised the demand with Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday.

University township

In another representation to Ms. Sitharaman, Mr. Durai Vaiko sought the setting up of a university township in Tiruchi as the Union government, in its Budget 2026, proposed to set up five such townships across the country.

Tiruchi was a major educational, administrative, and industrial hub in central Tamil Nadu and had several premier national and state-level institutions such as the National Institute of Technology, Indian Institute of Management, Bharathidasan Institute of Management, Indian Institute of Information Technology, and Tamil Nadu National Law University, besides Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd.

The city already has the educational and institutional ecosystem for setting up such as township, he said and added that the city was well connected by rail, road and air.
