Chakaravarthy, who played the Indian Premier League despite a toe injury, had been declared fit by the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) ahead of the T20I series in England. However, he suffered a hamstring injury ahead of the fourth T20I and has been ruled out of the Zimbabwe tour.
Sportstar understands that the selection committee, in consultation with head coach Gautam Gambhir and CoE chief VVS Laxman, who will oversee the side in Zimbabwe, has opted to recall Bishnoi after he was left out of the original squad.
The recall comes despite Bishnoi enduring a difficult outing in the third T20I against England, where he was taken apart by Jacob Bethell. The Zimbabwe series will now provide the leg-spinner with an opportunity to stake his claim ahead of a busy white-ball calendar.
Meanwhile, pace-bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana has also been ruled out after missing the final two T20Is in England because of injury. Harshit underwent scans in England on Friday and will also miss the ODI series against England.
