Yamaha Aerox E vs Aerox 155: Petrol or Electric, where to invest your money, it is a profitable deal; Know

Yamaha has recently launched Aerox E, the electric version of its popular maxi-scooter Aerox 155. Both models focus on sporty looks, premium feel and performance, but there is a big difference in the powertrain. Ex-showroom prices for the Aerox 155 petrol version start around ₹ 1.43 lakh (Standard) and go up to ₹ 1.46 lakh for the Version S.

Whereas, the price of Aerox E is ₹ 2.81 lakh (ex-showroom), which is about ₹ 1.35 lakh more expensive than the petrol version. This comparison is going to be useful for those riders who are looking for a balance between performance, running cost and practicality. Will an expensive e-scooter save money in the long run? Let us understand the difference between the two with details of design, features and powertrain.

design details

The design of both the scooters is almost similar. Sharp maxi-scooter styling, muscular body, LED lighting and sporty stance. The Aerox 155 gets 14-inch wheels, flat floorboard (somewhat) and 24.5 liters of underseat storage. The Aerox E also has a similar look, but the storage space is reduced due to the dual removable battery packs.

The E version weighs 139 kg (126 kg for petrol), which is slightly heavier due to the battery. The petrol version offers more options in colours, while the E is mainly available in bluish white. Both look premium and attractive, but the electric elements like the battery dock and TFT display on the E add an extra futuristic touch.

Features details

The Aerox 155 has features like Y-Connect Bluetooth, digital instrument cluster, smart key (in S variant), traction control, single-channel ABS, LED lights and side stand cut-off. Aerox E is ahead among these. It can be bought with 5-inch TFT display, navigation, three riding modes + Boost, reverse function, traction control and dual disc brakes. The removable battery system makes the E convenient for those living in flats where charging at home is easy. However, the petrol version has the advantage of more storage and easier refueling.

Aerox 155 has a 155 cc liquid-cooled VVA engine, which produces 15 PS power and 13.9 Nm torque. Top speed is around 115 km/h, mileage is 40-45 kmpl and range is 220 km on full tank (5.5L). CVT transmission is smooth.

The Aerox E has a 9.4 kW PMSM motor (48 Nm torque), top speed 95.5 km/h and IDC range of 117 km (two 1.5 kWh batteries, total 3 kWh). Charging time is 6 hours 20 minutes (both batteries). The E enjoys instant torque and a silent ride, but real-world range may be short.

Will EV Payback?

E is cheaper in running cost. The petrol cost per 12,000 KM per year is around ₹30,000, while the electricity cost of E is only ₹2,800-3,000. The difference of ₹1.35 lakh can be recovered in 4-5 years (on driving 1,000 km/month). But battery degradation, charging infrastructure, limited range and less storage are the drawbacks of E. Petrol Aerox is more flexible, refueling is easier and better for long trips.
