In a recent conversation with Elle India, Rakul Preet Singh reflected on her journey across industries and what she wants from the next chapter of her career. Having worked in large-scale commercial films and built pan-India visibility, she describes herself as being at a point of reassessment.

I’ve done the ornamental roles. I don’t want to just be the girl who shows up for four scenes and four songs. I want to play women with an arc — whether she’s a sharply dressed urban girl driving the story forward or a rooted small-town character fighting her own battle.”

The comment signals a clear shift. Rakul is not dismissing mainstream cinema; she is recalibrating her place within it. For her, the emphasis is now on characters that evolve — roles that allow her to participate in the narrative rather than decorate it.

Then comes the caveat, delivered with a laugh. “Having said that, if Shah Rukh Khan calls and it’s four scenes and four songs, I’ll do it. Obviously.”

The remark is light, but it also underlines her pragmatism. “Sometimes you do a film because of the maker you want to work with. Sometimes it’s the co-actor. Sometimes it’s the part. I don’t want to box myself,” she explained. “Put me on screen with no makeup in a raw, realistic story — great. Give me glam — also great. I just want longevity. I don’t want to be defined by age.”

Her admiration for Shah Rukh is hardly new. Earlier this year, when the actor temporarily moved out of his iconic Mumbai residence Mannat during renovations and into a four-floor apartment at Puja Casa — a property owned by producer Vashu Bhagnani — Rakul found herself in close proximity to the superstar. The actor is married to Vashu’s son, Jackky Bhagnani, and resides in a building in the same vicinity.

In a separate interaction, she described herself as a devoted fan. “I am such a Shah Rukh sir fan that I told Jackky, whenever he needs anything at home, if he has to speak to someone, send me,” she said, laughing. She joked about volunteering for the smallest household fixes just for a chance to meet him.

Rakul eventually met Shah Rukh over dinner and described him as “extremely welcoming.”

The affection, however, does not dilute her clarity about her own career. She was last seen in De De Pyaar De 2.
